Do you [Accept] [Decline]?

Nikole thought ‘accept’ and then focused back on the conversation around her.

Tako turned to Arianee. “Daylight is nearly gone. Can you find stones for us this evening or do you need tomorrow as well?”

Arianee considered his question. “I might be able to find them tonight, but I’d prefer to start in the morning. I know who I prefer to seek out, and he prefers mornings. I don’t want to settle for any other mage.”

Tako nodded and addressed the group. “In that case, tomorrow Arianee will work to procure our stones as we inspect our gear and ensure we’re ready to travel. Grog, Arianee, do you have funds to stay in Vadress?”

Arianee nodded. “Yes, though staying here doesn’t sound like any fun.”

Tako smiled. “Well, it’s important to be where the action is.”

“I hope,” Arianee said, rising. “But I think the real action will be with you in Valeria. Nik, should we retire?”

Nikole nodded, and she and Mojo stood to follow Arianee up the steps to their room. As she turned to say goodnight to the men, she saw them also rising to retire for the night. “Night, guys,” she said as she waved.

“As you say,” Tako said, giving her a small wave.

The next morning, Nikole woke as Arianee gently shook her. “I’m up,” Nikole murmurred while she yawned.

“I need to be off, and I doubt the others are awake. The mage I need is up before dawn and retires in the early evening. Will you tell the others where I’ve gone?” Arianee asked.

“Sure,” Nikole said groggily, moving to sit up.

“There is no need for you to get up,” Arianee said.

“It’s OK, I feel like I’ve been the last one up for a few days. I think it would be good to stop being the slacker,” Nikole said, yawning again. The two women walked out their door and down the stairs, the cat sluggishly following behind. Nikole sat at the table that had become the unofficial meeting area and waved a tired hand toward Arianee as she departed. She sat, scratching Mojo, using her hands to make various facial features on the annoyed but tolerant cat, quietly crooning to him about what a pretty boy he was.

Not long after, Mace wandered down the stairs and over to the table. “I see you can wake without bellowing about your need for carpy?” he asked.

Nikole snorted a laugh. “It’s ‘coffee’.”

Mace returned her smile. “Bean juice.” He made a face of repulsion.

“Can I ask you something?” Nikole asked. Mace nodded. “On one of my quests, I have a reward of a glyph. Tako mentioned them on, like, day one for me, but all he said was people absorb them throughout their life. I don’t really understand them.”

“Is this for one of your quests from Elandria?” Mace asked.

“Does that matter?”

“No, just curiosity,” he said.

Nikole sighed. “No. It’s not one of those quests. It’s a new one about where we’re going now, to talk to dragons. Anyhow, it says the reward is, hang on”—she expanded the quest under the new title and read—“a glyph of persuasion.
